A completed Riverwalk is the key to ensuring the continued growth and successful development of McHenry’s downtown. A completed Riverwalk brings more of “The Good Life” to more people by extending the opportunities to gather along this beautiful site and access the pleasures of our waterway. The vision of our proud past is poised to become a new reality with benefits for all.
After constructing a successful Phase I, in 2017 McHenry Riverwalk Foundation hired the Hitchcock Design Group to review and update plans for the next phase of this project. The plans call for further development of the Green Street segment, Miller Point, and Riverside Drive.
The Green Street segment includes two smaller segments joined by the Green Street Bridge. The segment going west toward Rt. 120 winds along the south bank of Boone Creek and includes the installation of a restored section of our iconic Historic Bridge, once used by cars to cross the Fox River into McHenry, now slated to be a pedestrian walkway over Boone Creek. The Green Street segment to the east includes a public plaza on the north bank of Boone Creek offering a gathering space and art installations with a walkway that connects to the public parking lot behind the Green street businesses.
The Miller Point segment is adjacent to the public piers and features a large public gathering space that can host visitors and waterside events. The Riverside Drive segment connects all remaining businesses on Riverside Drive to the Riverwalk and includes a gateway feature that connects the McHenry Riverwalk to the Pearl Street Bridge on the north.
The McHenry Riverwalk Foundation is a 501(C)(3) non-profit volunteer organization made up of local community members actively involved with the City of McHenry, the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce, and the McHenry Downtown Business Association.
